Outpost for marine research and accommodation in Bangka Island, North Sulawesi, Indonesia

The Coral Eye outpost on Bangka Island

The center, designed by studio ARC.S, was thought of as a dynamic space where worklife and private spaces could merge into one experience. The structure has been made with the craftsmanship of local artisans, employing local resources and adopting traditional building techniques, adapted to fit the specific requirements of a modern, state-of-the-art facility.

Work - The 150 sqm laboratory includes wet workspaces, an office and a large controlled space for practical and theoretical courses . The pier, respectful of the reef’s ecosystem, provides quick access to the sea - where a diving boat is always ready to go.

Life - A large, squared table, that can accommodate up to 20 people, is a core element around where the social life of the center revolves, giving rise to a cosy, convivial and roomy open space that guests can share at any time of the day. In fact, all common areas - kitchen and bar, library and meeting room - are developed around this area, benefiting also from the large sea-facing terrace – an ideal space to relax after a long day of work in the sea.

Private spaces – All of the eight rooms are designed to accommodate up to three people, according to personal demands and needs. Three of the rooms, more exclusive than the others, have a large private bathroom; the remaining five also have a private bathroom, but it's located outside the room.
